Bon Jovi is arguably the most successful of the 1980s "hair bands", selling over one hundred million albums worldwide in their twenty-year run. Led by lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Jovi, the group came together in 1983 and released their debut album in 1984. The self-titled album achieved gold status and landed Bon Jovi a gig opening for ZZ Top at Madison Square Garden and then opening for the Scorpions and Kiss as they toured Europe. Their second album was met with little enthusiasm; however, Slippery When Wet, their third album, pushed the boys of Bon Jovi to superstar status with the hit singles "Living on a Prayer" and "You Give Love a Bad Name".
